許多年輕學員進行英語演講訓練時常常會說不知道要講甚麼，這時我們的引導方式就是
(1) 跟學員聊聊天，了解學員生活中有哪些事情是具有意義且難忘的。
(2) 接著我們請學員先用中文完成演講的初稿。如下圖左邊。
(3) 將學員的中文初稿修正成容易以英文結構輸出的版本。如下圖右邊。
(4) 由學員將修正後的版本翻譯成英文。如下方英文稿。
(5) 英語教練修正英文稿後，再跟學員討論出最後的演講版本。

My Grandma’s Dining Table

1. My grandma lives in Taichung. Because it is a bit far from Kaohsiung, I only see her once every two months. When I know the time I will go to Taichung, I am looking forward to that day.
2. Grandma is from a family of business people, but she is still very traditional. Because she grew up in the very special family environment, she helped her family do business from a young age, but she also loves to be a traditional woman. She is good at cooking. Whenever I go back to Taichung, I always see a table full of delicious food. Then the whole family sit around the table, eating, talking, and laughing during the meal. This is where my mom grew up. No wonder my mother is so elegant.
3. Grandma has four children. They grew up and have their own children. Do you think Grandma’s noisy dining room has gone quiet? No, not at all! Now my grandma has seven grandchildren. Every time we come back to Taichung we have family reunions because we usually go back together from different parts of Taiwan. The children enjoy the foot my grandma cooks. The adults talk everywhere in the house. All the family members are very close to each other.
4. Whenever we all get together, grandma always keeps preparing all the dishes. When she finally sits down at our request, she is happy when everyone is happy. She looks at the happy smile on the face of her children and grandchildren, her eyes look like smiling. Her face makes me feel warm. I will never forget my grandma’s dining table.

嚇唬台灣人的下面這種貼文標題令人厭惡。

「不想被外國人笑，一球冰淇淋別說成a ball of ice cream…」https://www.businessweekly.com.tw/careers/blog/19212

然後文章作者就說”a scoop of ice cream”才是正確的表達。會這樣說的人其實並不懂文字的內涵，就好像有人台灣人說”drink soup”就GG了一樣，沒有思考用字的真正意義。下面這篇The New Yorker的文章第四行正好用到a ball of ice cream， https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1939/03/11/department-of-amplification-5

有關食物的文章提到balls of ice cream很多。我們想想「一球冰淇淋」跟「一勺冰淇淋」是否有意義上的差異？如果是在路邊攤跟拿著勺子的小販說「兩勺冰淇淋」或「兩球冰淇淋」都沒甚麼問題的，但我們應該不會走進餐廳，在沒有看到勺子的情況下說：我要「兩勺冰淇淋」，這時我們當然說”two balls of ice cream”。

要說好語言不必自我設限，當我們對句子的結構非常熟練，再多體會文字的真義，我們用簡單的單字也能做深入的表達。

參加考試時如果有英文作文項目，如果應試者必須自訂標題或抄寫標題，常常會困惑於是否每個字的第一個字母都需要大寫，本文參考AP Stylebook，列出字首字母大小寫的通則，但是並不是所有出版商或作者都會按照這些論文規範，如果不想過於麻煩，那只要按照下面這句話即可：第一及最後一字的字首大寫，中間的字介係詞及連接詞不必大寫，其他字首都大寫。

• 寫作作品的標題與副標題必須首字母大寫

• 標題中每個字原則上首字母需要大寫，但是to，以及冠詞a、an、the不需要大寫，除非這些字為標題的第一個字或最後一個字。

• 除了冠詞之外，少於五個字母的介係詞及連接詞都不需要大寫，例如from、for、of、and、in不需要大寫，除非這些字為標題的第一個字或最後一個字，或是出現於副標題的句首或冒號後方。

• 然而，如果不是冠詞、介係詞或連接詞，其他的詞類即使少於五個字母，每個單字的第一個字母都需要大寫。

• 在文章中出現標題時，該標題的大小寫規則跟實際標題規則一樣，但通常以斜體字呈現。

長大

大人們常常會說：「你長大了，你變得懂事了」，但是，你知道什麼是真正的長大嗎？長大不是你到了某個年紀，就叫長大，我覺得長大就是在你經歷了某件事之後的某個瞬間，你會覺得所有事情都不一樣了，而那個瞬間只有自己會懂。在那個瞬間，你會發現你必須學會獨立，必須學會控制自己的情緒，必須變得成熟，不能在像以前的自己一樣，想怎樣就怎樣的哭鬧。

講個例子，有一天在我要去學校之前，我覺得那個心態變得跟之前不一樣了，不在跟以前一樣，去了學校就開始聊天，而是變得異常安靜，我的朋友們都來問我怎麼了，但是，說真的我也不知道我怎麼了，我就是突然不想講話，只想坐在那安靜的看書，腦中突然就浮現幾句話「你要認真」，「你要成熟」隨著這幾句話的出現，我就知道，我終於長大了

但是，我對長大有不同的看法。

甚麼是真正的長大呢？並不是你到了某個年紀，你就長大了。長大只是某一個瞬間，那是當你經歷了某件事的瞬間。當那個瞬間來臨，你會覺得所有事情都不一樣了，而那個瞬間只有自己會懂。在那個瞬間之後，你會發現你必須學會獨立，必須學會控制自己的情緒，你必須變得成熟，你不能在像以前一樣，想怎樣就怎樣或像小孩子一樣哭鬧。我有過那個瞬間。

有一天在我要去學校之前，我覺得我的心變得跟以前不一樣了，那一天，我到了學校不再跟以前一樣開始跟同學聊天。對我而言，那一天變得非常安靜，我只坐著看書，我對自己說「你要用功努力，你要成熟。」當這幾句話的出現，我知道我終於長大成熟了。

那一天我的朋友們來問我怎麼了，但是，我只是微笑說，沒事啊！我突然不像以前一樣多話，我只是知道那是新的一天，那是新的我。

Growing Up!

It doesn’t take a long time to grow up! Adults often say, “When you grow up, you will know a lot of truths and become mature."

However, I have a different view of growing up. What really is growing up? It’s not that you grow up when you reach a certain age. Growing up is just a moment. That is the moment when you experience something. When that moment comes, you will feel that everything is different. And only you will understand that moment. After that moment, you will find that you must learn to be independent,you must learn to control your emotions, you must become mature, you can’t do whatever you want or cry like a child like before. 

I have had that moment. One day before I was going went to school, I felt that my heart mind became different from before.That day, when I arrived at school, I stopped chatting with my classmates as before. For me, that day became very quiet.I just sat reading. I said to myself, “You have to work hard, you have to be mature."When these few words appeared, I knew that I had finally grown up and become mature. My friends came to ask me what was wrong that day, but I just smiled and said, “I am OK! Suddenly I am not as talkative as before.

I just know that it is a new day. That is the new me now.
