Trees That Tell Stories

Sacred trees are not only found in Taiwan. The book Wise Trees show you the photoes of sacred trees all around the world. Photographers Len Jenshel and Diane Cook spent 3 years making Wise Trees.

The first photographs were the blossoming “Survivor Tree." The tree had been pulled out of the ruins of the World Trade Center weeks after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The tree was nursed back to health and re-planted a decade later at what is now the National September 11 Memorial.

In Varanasi, India, a sweet shopwas built around a tree considered too holy to cut down. People there use the tree’s leaves to repel insects, the sap for stomach pain and the twigs to brush their teeth.

In Naunde, Mozambique, a huge mango tree serves as the village center. Under its branches, people tell stories, make marriage arrangements and resolve land disputes.

At a temple in Varanasi, India, people pray to the monkey god Hanuman, who is believed to be embodied in this tree. Devotees leave offerings, rub vermilion paste into the tree’s bark and wrap thread around the tree’s base.

In West Bali, a road runs straight through a sacred banyan tree. Engineers insisted the land the tree grew on was the best place for the road, so worshippers prayed for forgiveness for the giant hole.

In the picture, Mexican children admire this cypress on a school field trip. The tree is said to be the widest (138 feet in circumference) and oldest (1,200 to 3,000 years) of its kind. Authorities diverted a major highway to spare the tree and dug a deeper well because of disappearing swampland.

To remember the children killed at this tree by Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge, visitors hang bracelets on the bark — woven threads, embroidered cloth, leather and beads.

This 170-foot-tall tree is found in the remote Forest of New Zealand and is sacred to the Maori people. The tree is called “Tane Mahuta,” which is translated as Lord of the Forest.

Trip, Travel, Journey, Tour

例如a traveling businessman或a traveling bus…

  1. The journey to her hometown takes three hours by plane or 28 hours by train.
  2. My journey to the establishment of this company took me 20 years.

This video shows AI New也s Anchor Making Debut in China

China’s Xinhua News Agency has billed the technology as the “world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) news anchor.

The anchor can learn from live broadcasting videos by himself and can read texts. Critics disagree about whether the technology appears natural. You can decide for yourself here with this male English-speaking anchor.

It was designed by Xinhua jointly with the Chinese search engine company Sogou.com. The wire service added it wasn’t clear when the technology would actually go into use. Xinhua points to what it sees as certain advantages of an AI anchor, saying it can work 24 hours a day on its official website and various social media platforms, reducing news production costs and improving efficiency.

But some experts are skeptical about the kind of news-watching experience an AI news anchor offers.AI anchor is evidently devoid of decision making and processing skills and cannot offer the emotional element given by a real journalist.

Facing a future full of artificial intelligence, what we should know is never new. That is you must use your creativity and improve the social skills which take time, patience, and natural intelligence to complete.

Creativity, Innovation or Originality

I am amazed by Lin’s creativity; she comes up with so many design ideas for my apartment. Lin

I can’t keep up with the rapid pace of technological innovation. New things come every day.

His innovations were already patented.

Her design always shows great originality.

A study shows that spending a few days out in nature, disconnected from all devices can boost creativity in many people.

For many tech companies, being at the cutting edge of innovation is the key to survival.

Hollywood has been criticized for not encouraging originality in the pursuit of blockbusters.

Much time, effort and creativity went into shooting the scenes for this film.

What is Electronic Cigarette?

Key Word

  1. vaporize (v.)
  2. solution (n.) 溶液
  3. inhale (v.) 吸入
  4. sensation (n.)
  5. activate (v.) 啟動
  6. extract (v.)
  7. base (n.)

An e-cigarette, or vaping, is a device that emits vaporized nicotine, or non-nicotine solutions, for the user to inhale. It aims to provide a similar sensation to inhaling tobacco smoke, without the smoke. “Vaping" is now the most popular form of tobacco use among teenagers in the U.S. since it first appeared in 2004. The nicotine content varies from zero to “extra-high”.

The device consists of three parts. (1) The battery powers the heating element. (2) The sensor activates the heater when the user sucks on the device. An LED may show when it is activated. (3) The solution, also known as e-liquid or e-juice, is made by extracting nicotine from tobacco and mixing it with a base for flavoring.

Although e-cigarettes have been marketed as a way to cut down on smoking by reducing the amount to the minimum, we must bear in mind that they are a nicotine-based product and no nicotine use is safe.

Mask has become a hallmark of protesters in Hong Kong

Key Words

  1. hallmark (n.)
  2. standoff (n.) 僵局
  3. demonstrator (n.)
  4. defiance (n.) 對抗
  5. measure (n.)
  6. on a large scale

Police and protesters engaged in a standoff in Hong Kong after pro-democracy demonstrators urged people to wear masks in defiance of a government ban on face coverings. Digital fliers circulated online called on people to wear masks depicting Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Lam introduced a measure to ban masks and face coverings at the start of October, but protesters have largely ignored it and police have not been enforcing it on a large scale. In Beijing, the ruling Communist Party said it planned to strengthen laws regarding Hong Kong in the name of national security. The party reaffirms the “one country, two systems” framework under which Hong Kong was handed over from British to Chinese control in 1997.

Siblings Locked by Father Waiting for End of Time

Key Word

  1. sibling(s) (n.)
  2. scruffy (a.)
  3. bewildered (a.)
  4. tip…off (v.) 密告…
  5. premises (n.)
  6. detain (v.) 拘留
  7. seclude (v.)

Dutch police discovered six young adult siblings who had spent years being locked away by their father in a secret room in an isolated farmhouse “waiting for the end of time". The siblings, aged 16 to 25, who lived with their 58-year-old father had no contact with the outside world.

They were found when one of the family members, a 25-year-old man with long hair had come into a café, looking scruffy and bewildered. He said he had not been outside for nine years. “You could see he had no idea where he was or what he was doing," according to the cafe owner. “He said he had run away and that he urgently needed help."

Police officers searched the farm after being tipped off. The owner of the farm did not want to cooperate and he was currently detained. The six family members were being cared for after being found in a “closed-off space". The siblings had apparently lived in a hidden cellar and survived on vegetables and animals tended in a secluded garden.
