Why are advanced countries still whaling?

Key Word

  1. hacktivist
  2. baffle 困惑
  3. are opposed to 反對
  4. justification
  5. sustainable 永續的
  6. minke whale
  7. fin whale

A “hacktivist" group recently took down many Icelandic government websites, in protest at the country’s practice of whaling.

In fact, Iceland is not the only country that still practices whaling: Japan and Norway also do so. This often baffles people from elsewhere. We wonder why are the countries still whaling if most counties are opposed to it.

Iceland’s whalers are legally allowed to hunt 154 fin whales and 229 minke whales. Icelanders usually offer two justifications. First, there are too many whales in the ocean and they eat all the fish. Second, Icelanders do not eat whale meat: it is the tourists that do that.

That first claim is arguable. The second is largely true. According to an official report, 35-40% of visitors to Iceland eat whale meat. And minke whales are found in all of the world’s oceans. There are over 100,000 minke whales in the wild. And although Fin whales are an endangered species based on the remaining number of them around the world, the fin whale population in North Atlantic is considered healthy. For that reason, hunting fin whales around Iceland is not a conservation threat. So, to Icelandic whalers, when they talk about whaling, they talk about whaling a particular population, not a species.

Whaling is a long tradition in Iceland and Icelanders think that they can use marine resources, as long as they do it in a sustainable and responsible way. The Japanese and Norwegian governments take a similar attitude towards whaling.

I don’t have the Internet.

I don’t have the Internet.

I don’t have the Internet.

  1. I don’t have access to the Internet.
  2. I cannot access the Internet.
  3. I cannot connect to  the Internet.
  4. I have no connection to the Internet.
  5. We don’t have Internet connection here.
  6. There is no Internet access here.

Every Story Comes to An End,
But Its Spirit Doesn’t.

Key Word

  1. compelling
  2. struggle
  3. isolation孤立
  4. outcast

To make a story compelling, there needs to be a character, who goes through a great struggle and changes due to life experiences. On the life journey, the character starts off in a bad position often in isolation. Then they learn and grow. They end up internally changed.

Such is the case of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, a character who throughout the course of seven seasons has faced a number of challenges that have tested his leadership and abilities. The series of Game of Thrones has come to an end.

No matter how the story ends, we audience have experienced a lonely outcast becoming the possible savior of the world. And after the HBO series end, the journey of a hero will still last in the audience’s mind in different ways.

Key words

❤️“Women hold up half the sky.”

The sentence is being passed down not because Mao Tse-Tung said it, but because it is what is happening today. From war-torn south America, where women demonstrate for peace to protect their children, to poor rural India, where girls spend all day walking miles collecting water for family, instead of going to school. Men and women each take responsibility in different ways for their own part in order to hold up the sky together. Men and women are surely different. Just because men and women are different, they are able to compensate for the disadvantages of each other to form a perfect whole. They both should value this truth.

Today, even if domestic violence is still rampant in some places in the world, ❤️men know very well that they can never hold up the sky without women.

Women hold up half the sky!

Today even if domestic violence is still rampant in some places in the world, men know very well that they can never hold up the sky without women.

An Indian woman is a World Champion Runner At the Age of 101.

Man Kaur celebrates after competing in the 100-meter sprint in the 100+ age category at the World Masters Games in April. Man Kaur is 101, but her routine could tire most 20-somethings.

Every day she wakes up at 4 a.m., bathes, washes clothes, makes tea, recites prayers until about 7 a.m. And then she goes to the track for an hour of sprinting practice. And she’s not just doing it for fun. A competitive runner, Kaur is a world record holder in her age group for several categories.

Now you may be thinking … is she really 101? Kaur doesn’t have proof of her age but her oldest child does. When her baby’s birth certificate was issued 81 years ago, Kaur was 20, so you do the math.

The centenarian is a role model for women and runners everywhere. Just this November, she was declared the brand ambassador for a nonprofit organization called Pinkathon, which raises awareness of women’s health issues — and encourages running as a way to improve physical fitness.

At the Pinkathon announcement event, Kaur was literally mobbed by gushing women, many of whom started running in their 30s and 40s. To them, Kaur is such a star. At her age, she’s so fit, enthusiastic, alive, independent and a genuine world champion!

She’s Won … How Many Gold Medals?! Since starting her competitive career, Kaur has run in meets in Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. And she’s nailed 17 gold medals for the 100-meter and 200-meter runs as well as javelin and shot put. To improve her speed, Kaur tries to go to the track every day. Three days a week, she does shot put and javelin practice; the rest of the week, she runs on the track. If the weather is inclement, she goes to the gym and lift weights.

Asked the secret of her longevity, mobility and fitness, Man Kaur says she doesn’t know, but she suspects it is crucial to be physically active. Her husband died at 102 and was also physically active.

計畫Plan or Project?

A: What is your “plan” for this summer vacation?

B: I am going to finish several “projects”.

The government had the long-term plan to improve the city’s road system for years. The government has started a multi-billion-dollar highway project. The cost of the project has increased since it began.

What is your plan for dinner?說成What is your project for dinner?😜

We are destined to leave the earth!

Key Words

  1. planet行星
  2. pessimistic
  3. to struggle

I think one day human beings will have to travel to a space station looking for a planet they can call home.

I don’t think we can overcome the climate crisis. I am not pessimistic. If you look at so many people on earth elsewhere struggle to survive every single day to put meals on the table or to pay off their housing loan you will agree with me. I am not saying that those people don’t care about the future of the earth. They probably do, but if they have to struggle to survive each single day, how could they do something today to help the earth survive 100 years from today. It’s like the lottery ticket you buy today can only be cashed 100 years from today. Will you buy it?

To fill up the gap between the poor and the rich is the solution to many global problems.
