Taiwan was under Japanese rule when the ROC was established in 1912. After Japan surrendered at the end of World War II, The ROC government began exercising jurisdiction over Taiwan in 1945. The first celebrated Double Ten Day in Taiwan took place in 1949.

The celebration traditionally begins with a flag-raising ceremony along with a public singing of the National Anthem in front of the Presidential Office Building. It is then followed by many aspects of traditional Taiwanese cultures. Aboriginal cultures have been integrated in recent years. In the end, the president would address the country.

In the 20th century, a military parade would usually took place and foreign ambassadors and other dignitaries would be invited to view the parade. It is likely that the military parade will always be a historical documentary.

Typhoon, Cyclone, Hurricane

We all know typhoons, but many wonder what hurricane and cyclone mean. The picture illustrates where hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones form. They are the same type of storm, but are named differently depending on where they form.

Area bigger than Taiwan burning in Amazon

While the Amazon rainforest is typically humid, forest fires are common during the dry season from July to October. They can be caused by naturally occurring events, such as lightning, but also by farmers and loggers.

Many people are deeply concerned about the fires because more than 2,500 spots are burning now.

The Amazon basin is crucial to regulating global warming, with its forests absorbing millions of tons of carbon emissions every year. When trees are burned, the carbon they are storing is released into the atmosphere. This makes the planet’s overall temperature rise, followed by extreme weather events such as droughts, further affecting biodiversity, agriculture and human health.

Key Words:

  1. humid (a.)
  2. crucial (a.) 重要的
  3. regulate (v.) 控管
  4. emission (n.) 排放
  5. atmosphere (n.)
  6. drought (n.) 旱災
  7. biodiversity (n.)

The 2020 US Census is to start in April. This year, a Taiwanese group is trying to make a change. Because there is no racial category of “Taiwanese” on the survey’s race question, this US-based Taiwanese group has launched a campaign to encourage all Taiwanese-Americans to check the box for “Other Asian” and then write in “Taiwanese” on the form, instead of checking the “Chinese” box.

The 2010 Census recorded 215,441 Taiwanese living in the US at that time. The league hopes to give an accurate reflection of the demographic situation with the strength and power in numbers.

Life As a Slasher!

2. slash (v.)
3. economic recession
4. redundancy (n.)
5. economic crisis

Slasher is on the rise. Traditionally we have been expected to have a single career. However, the economic recession has led many individuals to take on multiple roles in the society. Moreover, it may be easier to recover from redundancy as a slasher.

A slasher must have a stronger and wider skillset that is supported by strong time management and organization skills. For our survival, during the current economic crisis, why can’t we both take an immediate job offer we are not sure about as well as working towards our dream job?

What Is the Gig Economy?

Key Words
1. gig economy
2. temporary (a.)
3. commonplace (a.)
4. freelancer (n.)
5. undermine (v.)
6. rooted (a.)

In a gig economy, temporary jobs are commonplace and companies tend toward hiring independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees. A gig economy undermines the traditional economy of full-time.

The result of a gig economy is cheaper, more efficient services, such as Uber. Those who don’t engage in using technological services such as the Internet tend to be left behind by the benefits of the gig economy. Cities tend to have the most highly developed services and are the most rooted in the gig economy.

How a typhoon is named?

Key Words:

  1. announce (v.) 宣告
  2. provide (v.) 提供
  3. complicated (a.)
  4. previous  (a.)

Each of 14 member nations from the Western North Pacific and South China Sea region in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) provides 10 typhoon names. Whenever a typhoon is formed, the WMO regional center in Japan is responsible for announcing the typhoon according to the 140 names provided. The set of 140 typhoon names include names of persons, animals, places, jewelry, etc. The names are extremely complicated as they are from different nations and cultures.

Taiwan is currently not a member of WMO. In other words, Taiwan never names any typhoon.

The latest version of the names for typhoons is as shown in Table 1. The table shows that the Typhoon 白鹿 is named by China, the previous typhoon that affected Taiwan was Lekima provided by Vietnam, and the next typhoon will be named Podul, provided by North Korea.
