幾個禮拜期間的反政府示威期間,香港警方使用催淚彈及橡皮子彈嚇阻這些針對爭議性的引渡法案的抗議行為。

到底這個法案意義何在?

反對人士認為這個方案將意味著中國警方可以因政治議題或商業犯罪在香港逮捕任何人,人們對於這逮捕行為將毫無抵抗力量。這個法案也將會破壞香港目前的自治系統。

Among weeks of anti-government demonstrations, the Hong Kong police used tear gas and rubber bullets to push back against the protests over a controversial extradition bill.

What could the bill really mean?

Critics fear that he bill will leave anyone in Hong Kong vulnerable to being caught by the Chinese authorities for political reasons or business offenses, and it would damage the city’s autonomous system.

1. Equipment、Facility 還是Device!你是不是有相同困擾呢?

由於equipment及facility這兩個字經常被翻譯為「設備」,所以常造成困擾。

首先,facility是「設施」,通常包括建築物。遊樂場就是一個facility。而遊樂場裡面會有各種的equipment,也就是「裝備」或「設備」,例如鞦韆或滑梯,但是令人困擾的是equipment是不可數名詞。至於device,則是一個可單獨運作的「裝置」或「儀器」。看這三個例句就明白了。

  1. A playground facility consists of some equipment for children, such as slides and climbing frames.
    遊樂設施包括一些兒童遊樂器具,例如溜滑梯及攀爬架。
  2. Some important equipment for mountain hiking is a pair of shoes, a rope, fire-lighting tools, and a flashlight.
    登山健行的一些重要裝備是登山鞋、繩子、生火工具、及手電筒。
  3. Rescuers used a special device for finding people in the buildings after the earthquake.
    地震後,救難人員用一種特殊的儀器來尋找建築物裡面的人。

👀See及Look之外,我們還能怎麼看!

跟五官及表情相關的動詞最能使得表達更豐富,如果我們在這些字上多下一點功夫,我們的表達能力可以瞬間提升。基礎學習者至少要把see, look, watch, stare分清楚。

  1. To see 看。這是感官能力,只要睜開眼睛就「看見」了,無論有沒有認真看。
    Every day, we open our eyes and see a lot of colors in the world.
  2. To look 認真看。想看清楚是甚麼東西時用的字。
    ⭐通常搭配適當介係詞look at, look for, look into…
    Look at the house. There is a cat on the roof.
  3. To watch 注視,觀賞。觀賞時的「看」,看著移動中的事物的「看 」 。
    Nature lovers often go to the mountain and watch different kinds of birds fly over.
  4. To stare 盯著看。stare指的是長時間盯著看,通常令人不愉快的看著。
    ⭐通常搭配適當介係詞stare at…
    Don’t stare at people. It is impolite.
  5. To glance 迅速掃描。想快速看完所有的內容。
    ⭐通常搭配介係詞glance around, glance through, glance at…
    May walked into the room and glanced around to see who was there.
  6. To glimpse 瞥見,迅速地看。 就是我們平常走在路上看東西模式,沒有特定目的。
    ⭐可搭配介係詞,但也可以直接加受詞。
    Dad glimpsed at my new dress and smiled.
    The sailors glimpsed land througth the thick fog.
  7. To gaze 凝視,盯著看 ,(因驚奇、羡慕或心不在焉) 長時間凝視。
    ⭐通常搭配介係詞gaze at, gaze over…
    Jack gazed at Jill as if they hadn’t seen each other for years.
  8. To squint 瞇起眼看。站在大太陽底下看東西時的狀況。
    The scientist squinted through the telescope.
    Jane squinted her eyes when the light was suddenly turned on.
  9. To peek 窺視,偷看。看東西時怕被人發現的那種「看」。

You Are Not A Drop In The Ocean.

This sentence made me stop from my busy routine.  I never thought about life from this perspective.  People do think of themselves as a tiny drop in the vast human ocean.  After all, there are so many people around us and more successful than us. Now what does it mean to be the entire ocean in one drop?

How can we carry the entire world within us?

Think of our life, the trips we make, the tears we cry, the laughter we share, the people we meet, the love we give and take. Don’t they mean anything?

We ARE a drop in the ocean. However, when we think of ourselves as nothing better than a drop in the ocean, we are telling ourselves that our actions or words are trivial.

When we think the other way around, as the entire ocean in a drop, we feel our value as an individual, no matter whether we are successful or not at the moment.

人生競賽中,防守無法贏得比賽!

In the life competition, defense doesn’t help you win.

When we play a ballgame, we sometimes play defense to prevent our opponent from scoring. As long as we play defense really well, we may win in the end.

However, in the life competition, playing defense doesn’t help us win at all. How are we able to play defense if we don’t even know where our opponents are.

We can choose not to beat them, but if we do want to win the competition, the only way is to score, that is, to play offense.

📝寫作基本架構:聯考/留學考短論文

第一段 介紹

篇幅約為整篇文章四分之一,不必寫太多。
不需要第一句就破題,先針對這個方向做一個概略的論述。這一段的最後一句再破題成為
thesis statement主題論述

第二段 主體

主要是介紹第一段的主題論述所描述的內容。最好能夠分成2個到3個部分說明。說明時盡可能以有助於讀者閱讀的方式組織,以下是一個例子:
    First

    Next

    Finally…

每一個說明單項都必須要以一個topic sentence主題句做開頭,再以數個句子來做解說,解說時做好句子的邏輯連接,絕對不要只寫項目卻不加說明。由於一般大學聯考作文的字數通常在150~200之間,以這個模式來寫作,字數一定會夠。但是若是留學考,字數則再250~400之間,甚至更大篇幅的寫作,則主體內的每個topic sentence及其說明的句子(supporting sentences)雖以相同觀念或模式進行,但是宜成為獨立的段落。也就是大學聯考以2~3段進行(要注意看題目有無要求),留學考以5段或5段以上進行。

第三段 結論

結論可以單獨一個段落,也可以附加到第二段的最後以一兩個句子來做結論。
結論不要重複前面已經提過的內容,盡可能以比較宏觀以及有未來性的方向來做陳述。
