同位語就是就像是補助語，提供進一步的資訊幫助讀者或聽眾理解，例如
My idol, director Ang Lee, has made his country known by westerners. (我的偶像，也就是李安導演，已經讓西方世界更認識他的國家。)這句子中的director Ang Lee就是同位語。同位語可以是名詞，名詞片語，或名詞子句。有時候同位語也像是形容詞子句。
